1963-72 CHEVY | GMC TRUCK, 19 GALLON ALUMINUM FUEL TANK

STEP: READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!

  1. Jack rear of truck and support the axle with jack stands.
  2. Remove the bed of the truck.
  3. Locate the spare tire crossmember. This is the narrow piece of channel held on by rivets just behind the shock crossmember.
  4. Remove the spare tire crossmember by drilling out the rivets and pressing the rivet out with a punch.
  5. Using a floor jack maneuver the new tank into position. The tank locates just behind the shock crossmember with the step down portion of the tank facing the rear of the vehicle.
  6. Once positioned, use large “c” clamps to hold tank in place. Drill the frame with a 3/8” drill bit using the mounting flange holes as guides.
  7. Position mounting straps on top of the lower portion of frame rail as seen in diagram.
  8. There are extra locations for fittings to be placed. Make sure to vent the tank so that vent tube sits higher than tank.
  9. If you have purchased a side fill tank, you will need to “C” notch the top of frame to allow for clearance of the fill.

FRAME PREPARATION FOR ALUMINUM FUEL TANKS

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS CONVERSION.

MAKE SURE THIS KIT FITS YOUR APPLICATION BEFORE PAINTING OR PLATING. PARTS THAT HAVE BEEN PAINTED, PLATED OR MODIFIED MAY NOT BE RETURNED.

  1. Start by removing the bed of the truck.
  2. The spare tire crossmember needs to be removed. It is the narrow crossmember, two crossmembers back from the shock crossmember. It is only mounted at the bottom of the frame rails and is held by one rivet on each side. To remove the rivets that hold the crossmember to the frame, either grind the heads off or drill out the centers and knock the rivets out.
  3. Using a jack to hold the new fuel tank in place, push the tank up from the bottom.
  4. Install the mounting rails under the tank ledges.
  5. Drill three 3/8” holes into the frame and tank mounting flange on each side of the tank and bolt in place.
  6. To vent the tank, the 90 degree 1/4 NPT fitting should be installed in the top threaded opening of the tank. Attach approximately 3 ft. of hose to the other end of the fitting.

The “C” notch plate is included with the tank.

I’m looking for a fuel tank that fits in the rear section of a stock 1957 chevy truck frame. It needs to fit between two crossmembers. approx. 27″x14″x? I’ve seen one I liked on a website but I don’t know how to contact the site. It’s autopaintdirect.com

I wish to raise my rear suspension in Chevy c20 pickup. I need to raise 1″ or more to clear my wheels.

C20 has rear coil springs plus leaf springs

We can help you with the rear coils. Without knowing the condition of the coils we can supply you with a variable rate setup. It should pick the rear up a little and offer better load carrying capacity. The auxilary leaf is found on the camper special and acts as an overload. Do not try to lift the rear with these auxilary helper leaves. Hope this helps.

How far down from the top of the tank are the tank mounting brackets?

  • Thanks for the instructions.. It’s pretty difficult figuring this stuff out on our own.

In my spare time… Oh, wait I don’t have any of that (just kidding). Anyways, I have been aware of this website for quite some time and decided to join the community and contribute as well as learn a lot from others. I am excited to get started on the forum and am looking forward to a great journey together. Lots of potential friends and I look forward to meeting many online.
